野戦病院？
このところ外来が混み合っているというお話を先日からしています。今日はさらに多く、ここ数年で最も多くの患者さんが来られた日になりました。
今から７、８年まえにもこれくらい多い外来があったのですが、それはインフルエンザの流行がドンと来たとき。２週間ほど続きましたが、大半がインフルエンザ患者で占められていました。
今回はなぜこんなに多くの患者さんが訪れているのか、定かな理由がよく分かりません。確かにインフルエンザ患者はまだ発生していますが、大流行ではありません。１週間に10名前後ですので、全体からはごく一部です。他に流行している感染症がいくつかありますが、それらが重なって、地域全体の感染症患者を多くしているということなのかもしれません。
最も目立つのはウイルス性胃腸炎（嘔吐下痢症）です。例年春先までこの感染症が流行しますが、今年は例年以上の流行がおきているようです。吐き気が強く、水分がとれないような子どもには早めに点滴治療が必要です。そのため、処置室のベッドがすぐにいっぱいになります。当院では処置用に最大８台のベッドを用意していますが、それでも足りず、点滴などのために順番待ちになってしまうこともあります。具合が悪いから早く点滴をしてあげたいと思うのですが・・
私は診療中は診察室から離れられません。混雑すればいっそうです。待合室や外の駐車場など、そうとう混雑しているだろうとは思うのですが、それを確認したり、対応するために指示を出したりすることもできません。唯一診察室を離れるのは、点滴などの処置で、私でなければできないことがあるときだけです。そんな時にざっと処置室の全体を見渡すのですが、まるで“野戦病院”のような様を呈しています（野戦病院がどんなところかを実際に見て知っているわけではありませんが）。あるいは、どこかで災害や大きな事故が起きて患者さんが次々に運ばれてきたというような印象です。
バタバタしている中で、文句も言わず、じっと待っていてくれる患者さんや親御さんたちに申し訳ないと思っています。私も看護婦も最大限の努力はしているつもりですが、それでも不都合なことがいろいろあるに違いありません。それでも耐えていただいているのですから、寛容さに感謝申し上げます。
明日はＧＷ連休の前日。外来も今日以上に混み合うかもしれません。月末の仕事も重なってはいますが、明日一日はとくに心して診療をしようと思っています。
